Richard H. Blackford
Richard Hugh Blackford is one of the foremost Jamaican impressionist painters currently living and working in Broward County, Florida. Largely self-taught, he is widely recognized for his expressive acrylic paintings that vividly reflect the rhythms, landscapes, and people of Jamaica, the broader Caribbean, and South Florida—his home for nearly two decades. Blending the warmth of the islands with the dynamic energy of South Florida, Richard’s work captures everyday moments and cultural traditions with striking color, movement, and authenticity. From lively marketplaces to tranquil coastlines, his canvases pay tribute to the richness of Caribbean and South Floridian life. His enduring goal is to celebrate and share the soul of these regions through his art. Richard launched his artistic career with a breakthrough solo exhibition of cricket-themed paintings in Jamaica in 2005. He has exhibited in Antigua, Barbados, and in the United Kingdom at the Haringey Gallery in Hornsey, London. Since relocating to South Florida in 2008, he has mounted over 20 solo exhibitions in Broward County, New York, Berwick, PA; and Maryland in the United States, building a devoted following both locally and internationally. In addition to his artistic practice, Richard holds a Diploma in Marketing from the College of Arts, Science & Technology (now University of Technology) and a Bachelor’s degree with honors in Management Studies from the University of the West Indies, Jamaica, as well as a Master’s degree in Education from the University of Phoenix, Arizona.
